If you are interested in owning a kayak shop, or know someone who might be:

This business is For Sale

A waterfront business offering kayaking and abalone / free diving gear sales, rentals, guided trips and tours. We started out offering just kayak rentals and sales in 1999. The shop was expanded to include abalone diving gear and guided trips in 2001. Our focus has been in developing and expanding a customer base by offering highly competitive pricing, listening and responding to our customer’s wishes and by providing excellent service and value.

Although this is very much a seasonal business, the opening of Abalone Season in April makes for an earlier start than is realized by most other visitor serving businesses in our area. This business could be a useful addition to an existing waterfront business or could continue as a stand-alone business that would be particularly well suited to an avid kayaker and/or abalone diver. While an interest in kayaking / diving would be helpful in operating this business, it does not require a high level of technical skill or experience.

This business has excellent potential for growth, particularly with the expansion of tourism on the Mendocino Coast. Possibilities for expansion and improved profitability include expanding the guided trips to include mid-week, evening/full moon tours and offering classes / lessons. The diving segment of this business might be expanded to include SCUBA gear and tank air fills. Although Noyo Pacific Outfitters has been open all year in the past, it might be worthwhile to consider closing or greatly reducing the hours of operation during the winter months.

A new operator of this business might also want to consider moving to a Highway One location in order to increase visibility. While this would likely result in the loss of on-site kayak rentals, it would also reduce the cost of insurance for liability and workers comp. This business is not bound by a lease, the current waterfront location is rented on a month – to –month basis.

Available for sale is the retail inventory, store fixtures and equipment, rental gear, a trailer that can hold over 20 kayaks, and special display and drying equipment for neoprene gear. The business has several key dealerships from suppliers that protect dealer territories and do not supply a competing dealer in the same area. We also offer our good name and reputation as well as a web site that generated over 50,000 unique visits (500,000 “hits”) over the past year. The current owner could be available  to work and/or consult on a part time basis for at least six months.
