TOURING KAYAKS BY SEDA
Why settle for the performance of a plastic touring kayak? You can have the performance of a composite kayak at a price that compares with most plastic models! We hesitated to choose SEDA kayaks, frankly because none of the large paddle shops in our area carry them. I had paddled several of SEDA’s models and while the performance was outstanding, my doubts persisted. Since SEDA kayaks are typically priced about $1000 lower than comparable models of other brands, we kept asking ourselves and others: “How could SEDA kayaks be priced so much lower than the other brands and still be a quality product?”
Matt Broze, former Safety Editor for Sea Kayaker Magazine has a reputation for being demanding when it comes to quality and performance. Broze is co-owner of Mariner Kayaks, a retail kayak shop in Seattle. They also design, manufacturer and sell custom kayaks. I was very impressed to learn that Mariner keeps only one brand of kayaks on hand, SEDA! I also had the opportunity to speak with the operator of a fiberglass shop who has repaired various brands of kayaks. He went on at length about some of the inferior construction that he has discovered in repairing various (more expensive) brands of kayaks. He expressed an appreciation of the quality of construction of SEDA products.
Most kayak manufacturers have expanded rapidly over the last ten years. Several brands have merged or been purchased by corporate organizations. SEDA elected to remain an independent family business. Rather than create a hyped-up image, SEDA has continued to promote their products through customer satisfaction. SEDA doesn’t have an extravagant catalog adorned with glossy color photographs. Their 40+-page catalog is packed with useful information instead. SEDA doesn’t spend tremendous amounts of money on advertising, attend trade shows, festivals or sponsor events. They don’t pay regional sales representatives or individual paddling stars to promote their products. (If you you’re a hotshot paddler looking for a sponsor, look elsewhere. SEDA doesn’t pay the winners who are paddling their kayaks.) While these activities might be a good way to gain exposure and publicity, SEDA believes that they would not add any real value to their products, but would definitely increase the prices they would have to charge!
We maintain a fleet of SEDA touring kayaks that are available for test paddling seven days a week. While you can order a kayak or canoe directly from SEDA, we’ll try to make it worthwhile for you to purchase yours from us. WE PAY THE SHIPPING COSTS TO OUR SHOP. We will special order SEDA kayaks to fill individual customer requests at no extra charge. (SEDA offers more than 300 different possible combinations in eight composite touring models: six colors plus clear on kevlar hulls, color striping, three choices in composite construction, another five color options on the Plastic Gypsy plus a rudder option!) If you want to take a kayak home with you immediately, we will sell our demo models (but we don’t offer any additional discounts on our SEDA demo kayaks.) We will order a SEDA kayak built to your specifications with a $200 deposit. (Deposits must be in cash or by check. They are refundable if your boat is not delivered on time and as ordered. Sorry, but we will not accept credit cards for deposits.) Delivery is three to eight weeks after an order is placed, depending on the season and shipping schedule.
