KAYAK LAP STRAP ®
The Lap Strap is a performance accessory designed for sit-on-top kayaks. It can improve the connection of the paddler to a kayak for rough conditions, surf and while performing a kayak (Eskimo) roll. The strap incorporates a specially designed clasp that is designed to release quickly under load. PLEASE NOTE: THE Lap Strap IS NOT A SAFETY DEVICE ! ! ! ! !
In the installation of the Lap Strap®, the user is responsible for determining the best position and method of attachment. The Lap Strap consists of a two-part clasp connecting cross-cockpit straps, and two diagonal straps. The diagonal straps are sewn to both cross-cockpit straps. It is recommended that the cross-cockpit straps be positioned so that they rest snugly across the thighs and not at the waist(where the clasp could slip under a PFD or jacket.) The diagonal straps are intended to hold the paddlers hips and also reduce the likelihood that the strap might turn over and trap the release bar against the operators lap. The diagonal straps should be attached aft of the cross straps. The four attachment points may be secured with stainless steel threaded fasteners and fender washers. An adjustable attachment can be made by looping the webbing around stainless steel bar straps (a footmans loop.) If the installer decides to punch (double) holes near the ends of the straps to insert machine screws, push a hot metal rod against the strap to make the holes. The heat melts the holes into the nylon and seals the edges so the webbing does not unravel.

The core of the Lap Strap is a specially fabricated, type 304 stainless steel latch and link type clasp. The link is welded to a sliding bar adjuster providing a strong base and a secure, reliable means of adjustment. The latch part consists of a bayonet pin and hook with an elongated release lever that is easy to reach. It is finished with a smooth rounded eye that will not cut your hand. A loop of cord or a grab ball may be tied to the release lever eye for added security. All straps are 2 tightly woven nylon (SCUBA weight belt type) webbing.
